Motor City Mower Gang Helps Dig Out Snowed In Detroiters

DETROIT (WWJ) - A group of volunteers who spend their summers mowing overgrown lots in Detroit are looking to make an impact during the upcoming winter storm.

With up to a foot of snow expected to fall on metro Detroit on Sunday, the Motor City Mower Gang is offering up snow blowing services to those in need.

"A lot of the men and women in the Mower Gang have snow blowers, so we're putting ourselves out there as a resource," the group's Tom Nardone told WWJ. "If someone or if there's a group of people that don't have a way to get to dialysis, or to the ER or something of that nature, we want to help."

Nardone said the group has been planning to take action like this for a few months now.

"We have about 30 volunteers, and they've been signed up since October. We call ourselves a task force. We're just waiting to be called," he said.

But because of the limited number of volunteers, Nardone said they're focusing on helping people with "high-priority" medical situations or emergencies.

"We're hoping to work with a medical center or some other situation of that nature, where they have patients that need to get in. We want to help the people that are calling in, saying they can't get out of the house for their appointment," he said.

The Mower Gang normally mows lawns at abandoned city parks and repairs playground equipment so kids have a safe place to play in the city.

If you know of anyone or an organization that could benefit from the Mower Gang's snow blowing service, contact Nardone at www.mowergang.com or post a message on their Facebook page.
