General Mills Backs Off Use Of Genetically Modified Ingredients In Cheerios

DETROIT (WWJ) - There's a big change coming to one of America's most popular breakfast foods.

Cereal maker General Mills said it's stopped using genetically modified ingredients in Cheerios says WWJ Health Reporter Sean Lee.

The foods manufacturer hopes the move will firm up customer loyalty in the face of growing opposition to genetically modified organisms or GMO's in foods.

Activist groups that want GMO's out of the food supply say the crops create environmental and health problems, and that consumers should have the right to know what they're buying.

General Mills, Monsanto, and other corporate giants, were key contributors to a $22 million campaign against a Washington state ballot measure that would have required labeling of GMO foods.
