U-Haul Crashes Through Front Window Of Downtown Post Office

DETROIT (WWJ) - Southeast Michigan has been buried by snow. However, as the brunt of this major winter storm moves past us, we'll have to deal with blowing snow, snow squalls and arctic temperatures while we try to dig out and clean up. Schools across the region are closed. Even businesses are telling workers to stay home.

In downtown Detroit, slippery driving conditions apparently contributed to a truck crashing into the main post office.

WWJ's Laura Bonnell -- reporting from the scene -- says it was a U-Haul box truck that smashed through the front window of the post office. Witnesses tell her the driver got out of the vehicle okay, although he was nowhere to be seen. Driver Keith Duncan says he couldn't believe what he was seeing.

"A lot of people stuck out here," Duncan said. "A lot of people crashing. I've helped a lot of people out here.

Was he surprised to see this U-Haul smash right through the front window of the post office?

"Very surprised, very surprised," he said.

As of 6:30am, employees were heading into work, staring at the truck which was still sitting in the front window of the post office. Until the truck could be removed and the window repaired, a security guard was standing watch.
