Crews Work To Repair Dozens Of Water Main Breaks, Leaks In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit Water Department is working to keep up with water main repairs amid this week's frigid temperatures.

Crews, Tuesday afternoon, were working to fix a major break at Connor and Jefferson Ave.  This follows another big break on Monday, near City Airport.

"We had 16 need leaks reported," said department spokesperson Mary Alponso. "We repaired ten, so right now we're at a backlog of 80 ... some of them are just leaks as opposed to breaks."

That might sound like a lot, but Alponso said it's to be expected.

"Actually, the water main breaks that we are currently experiencing are about average for this time of year," she said. "The fact that we are under an arctic blast has caused us to be a little more vigilant, and do some outreach to customers to make sure that, if there is a break, they know the right place to report it."

Alponso is asking that customers to call them if they see a leak or water main break in Detroit at the department's emergency number: 313-267-7401.
