NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee’s search for a new coach has taken a turn to an old foe with the Titans interviewing Jim Caldwell.
The Titans confirmed Wednesday that they had completed an interview with Caldwell, the former Indianapolis Colts coach and current Baltimore Ravens’ offensive coordinator.
The team plane picked Caldwell up in Baltimore on Wednesday morning and was scheduled to return to Baltimore late Wednesday afternoon.
Caldwell, 58, also has interviewed with the Washington Redskins and the Detroit Lions.
He spent a decade with Indianapolis first as quarterbacks coach in Indianapolis with Peyton Manning. He replaced Tony Dungy as coach in 2009, and they reached the Super Bowl his first season only to lose to New Orleans in February 2010. He finished 26-22 in his three seasons before being fired in January 2012.
Caldwell joined Baltimore as quarterbacks coach in February 2012 working with Joe Flacco before being promoted to offensive coordinator before the Ravens went on to win the Super Bowl. The Ravens struggled this season finishing 29th in total offense and 30th running the ball.
The Titans are one of five NFL teams still looking for a new coach after firing Mike Munchak after three seasons on Saturday. Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden interviewed with Tennessee on Tuesday, and Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer reportedly is set to interview with the Titans on Thursday. The Titans’ team plane had a flight plan filed to head to Cincinnati’s airport in northern Kentucky after leaving Baltimore on Wednesday night.
This is only the team’s second coaching search since leaving Texas for Tennessee in 1997, and the first conducted by Webster. Tennessee went 7-9 this season extending a playoff drought to five straight years with the last postseason win back in January 2003.
