New Turn Signal For Cyclists In Snyder's Hands

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan bicyclists will likely get another way to signal a right turn.

The state Senate on Wednesday gave final approval to legislation giving bicyclists the option of signaling a right turn by extending their right arm horizontally. They currently can signal a right turn with an L position by extending their left arm upward, a signal in effect since shortly after World War II.

The bill's sponsor, Republican Rep. Anthony Forlini of Macomb County's Harrison Township, has said the bill grew out of his personal biking experience. He says most car drivers are unfamiliar with bicyclists' right-hand turn gesture.

Gov. Rick Snyder is expected to sign the bill. It won unanimous approval in the House and was passed 36-1 in the Senate.
