DETROIT (WWJ) – Detroit police have arrested a man and a woman who were at the home where a 4-year old girl fatally shot her 4-year-old cousin Thursday.
The arrests, however, are on unrelated charges. Both were wanted on outstanding felony warrants.
However, a police department spokesman says charges are being sought against the pair for being former felons in possession of a firearm.
The children were in a bedroom watching TV when the gun was discovered under a bed. The little girl picked-it up and fired it, striking her cousin in the chest.
Melvin Buchanan, a neighbor on Tuxedo street, spoke with WWJ’s Pat Sweeting:
“We are tired of this. Just put these things up around these kids, that’s all I want ya’ll to do, ‘cuz it’s deadly and it’s dangerous out here,” he said.
He says that children see gun play in movies and on TV and think it’s just a joke.
The Wayne County Coroner’s office is expected to perform an autopsy on the child Saturday.
