Good Samaritan Dies Months After He Was Shot Chasing Muggers

DETROIT (WWJ) - A Good Samaritan who rushed to the aid of two robbery victims, has died.

Police said it was an act of bravery that ultimately cost 61-year-old Calvin Robinson his life.

This week, family members made the difficult decision to remove Robinson from life support, after he spent six months in the hospital.

Robinson was listed in temporary serious condition after the incident. Sharon Robinson told WXYZ that, at first, her husband could talk a little bit but he never fully recovered like they'd hoped. Doctors eventually told the family there was nothing else they could do.

Last August, Robinson was driving in downtown Detroit when he witnessed two young women being mugged on Jefferson Avenue near the Renaissance Center. Robinson got out of his car to help the women and then pursued the perpetrators.

He was shot in the head a few blocks away, at St. Antoine and Atwater.

No one has been arrested in the case.

The incident occurred while the Rib and Soul Festival was taking place at Hart Plaza, and there are believed to have been many witnesses to the robbery and the shooting.
