Report: Detroit Officers Tailed Police Commission Official
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A report says Detroit police officers conducted surveillance on the president of a commission that sets department policy and conducted searches for a new police chief.
Details of the report from the city's Office of Inspector General were reported earlier this week by MLive.com. The report follows an investigation prompted by complaints from Jerome Warfield, who led the Board of Police Commissioners at the time.
The report says the surveillance was ordered by Chester Logan, who then was interim chief. Warfield complained about possible surveillance in May, when he was followed by unmarked cars with tinted windows.
The report says officers were ordered to follow Warfield at least six times in the first four months of 2013, although it doesn't identify Logan's suspected motive.
Police Chief James Craig received a preliminary report in September. He agreed with the Office of the Inspector General that police resources were wasted.
