Gov. Snyder Declares Financial Emergency In Royal Oak Township, Highland Park
ROYAL OAK TWP. (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder has determined that financial emergencies exist in Oakland County's Royal Oak Township and the Detroit enclave of Highland Park.
Snyder agreed Thursday with the earlier findings of two financial review teams. The reviews are part of a process that could lead to the appointment of emergency managers.
Officials in the two southeastern Michigan communities have until 5 p.m. on Feb. 6 to request hearings.
The review teams found that Royal Oak Township's funds decreased by about $500,000 from the end of 2011 to the end of 2012. Highland Park owes about $19 million to vendors, including $18 million to Detroit for water and sewer services.
State-appointed emergency managers are in charge in Detroit, Allen Park, Benton Harbor, Flint, Hamtramck and Pontiac, as well as in several school districts.
