Ohio Man Killed By Police Officer In Trailer Park Standoff

ECORSE (WWJ) - A man shot and killed by police during a standoff in Ecorse has been identified as Billie Joe Woolford of Ohio.

An Ecorse cop fired on Woolford on Tuesday after police say the armed 48-year-old man threatened officers who were trying to get him to surrender.

Police were initially called to the scene on a report that a resident was acting distraught, was engaged in destructive behavior, and had broken windows in a mobile home at June's Trailer Park, near I-75 and Southfield Road. The caller, a trailer park employee, said he spotted blood at the scene, and that Woolford had begun shooting at him.

According to police, when officers arrived they found Woolford  "agitated" and "shouting obscenities."

Ecorse Public Safety Director Mike Moore said that's when they called in the Downriver Mutual Aid Special Response Team.

"They attempted to engaged him in conversation and talk him down," said Moore, "and he responded by firing at the armored vehicle, in turn pointed the weapon in the direction of the police officers."

"One of the officers there fired his weapon and in turn killed the suspect," Moore said.

Woolford  was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said he was along in the mobile home during the conflict and no one else was hurt.

Moore said appears Woolford may have been upset over an eviction notice he had received.

Michigan State Police are investigating to make sure proper protocol was followed.
