911 Operator Tells Witness To Crime There's Nothing Police Can Do

DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit resident takes looking out for ones neighbor to heart, but when she witnessed a crime taking place and called 911 to report it, she was shocked by the response.

Decia, a resident on Patton Street off of Joy Road, says she's frustrated over the response from a 911 operator as she witnessed a man stealing tires off of her neighbor's 2014 Ford Escape.

She called 911 but the operator allegedly refused to take the report - saying there was nothing the police could do.

"As I'm on the phone for police, she's telling me, the 911 dispatcher, she's telling me, it's nothing that I can do. My neighbor, Miss Sylvia will have to call in and file a report because it's not my vehicle," Deica said.

Decia says she got the thief on surveillance tape.

She and the victim Sylvia Gilford told WWJ's Stephanie Davis that they know that stealing tires is not a high priority for police - they just wanted to alert authorities to the crime because this is not the first time that this has happened on the block.

WWJ Newsradio 950 has reached out to the Detroit police for comment and is awaiting  reply.
