Two Arrested In CVS Security Guard Shooting, Third Suspect Nabbed Later

DETROIT (WWJ) Detroit police arrested three people in connection with the killing of a security guard at a CVS pharmacy last week.

Investigators initially arrested two and were still looking for a third suspect, saying he should be considered armed and dangerous. About an hour later, at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, they announced the third suspect, Jamare Lanell Rucker, 20, was also caught. Rucker was taken into custody by a joint task force at 14 Mile Road and Dequindre in Madison Heights, police said.

"Intel led police to Jamare Rucker, who was observed walking in the area of 14 Mile Road and Dequindre," police said in a press release, thanking the Comprehensive Violence Reduction Partnership Task Force, Detroit Homicide Joint Task Force, Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms, Michigan State Police, the Michigan Department of Corrections and the citizens of Detroit.

Courtney Meeks, 24, was shot and killed outside the store. Police say the guard was trying to help a colleague when he was shot in the neck at 8:50 p.m. Wednesday at the CVS Pharmacy on Schaefer Highway, just south of McNichols Road.

"We believe that it was something that had to do with another security guard and the victim came running out to help and was shot," Deputy Chief Rodney Johnson said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Detroit police at 313-596-2260 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

If anyone has seen Jamare Lanell Rucker, please contact Detroit Police homicide at 313-596-2260.
