DETROIT (WWJ) - Police say a 12-year-old girl who seemingly vanished from her east side Detroit home has been found safe.

Officials say Jaylyn Vaughn was found safe at a friend's home Tuesday morning after disappearing the night before.

Andrea Vaughn told WWJ's Mike Campbell Jaylyn "vanished into thin air" around 8 p.m. Monday at their home in the 9000 block of Bedford, near Whittier Street and I-94.

"[Her sister] picked her up from school, they came here, did homework and cleaned up. Her sister asked her to do something for her, she said OK and then she was fixing dinner for her," Vaughn said. "And then she called Jaylyn. She said she didn't hear anything so she thought Jaylyn was asleep, and she went downstairs and she wasn't there."

Vaughn said the back door of the house was open, leading her to believe that Jaylyn might have wandered off or worse, that she was snatched right from her home. She and other family members stayed up all night, searching the neighborhood and knocking on doors, but found no sign of Jaylyn.

Detroit police said Andrea Vaughn filed a missing person's report just moments before the child was discovered.
