White Sox OF Garcia To Miss Rest Of Season
CHICAGO (AP) — White Sox outfielder Avisail Garcia will miss the rest of the season after causing a tear in his left shoulder while trying to make a diving catch.
An MRI taken Thursday at Chicago's Rush University Medical Center revealed a torn labrum. He is scheduled to have surgery next week.
"Obviously, it's lousy," Chicago general manager Rick Hahn said. "It stinks for the kid, who is crushed right now. He's very disappointed. He was hoping this was going to be a temporary thing, but, obviously, understands the medical realities in front of us and what they are. He's taking it very hard."
"It stinks for White Sox fans, who are going to be deprived of the opportunity to see this kid on a daily basis this year. It's just one of the cruel realities of sports," he said.
The 22-year-old Garcia was hurt trying to grab DJ LeMahieu's drive to right field in the sixth inning of Wednesday's loss at Colorado. The ball was jarred loose when Garcia hit the ground.
The injury is a big blow to the White Sox, who are trying to bounce back from a 99-loss season. Garcia has batted .298 since being acquired from Detroit last summer in the three-team trade that sent Jake Peavy to Boston.
"It's tough when an injury happens. It's never easy," manager Robin Ventura said. "It's harder on him, especially him getting his first shot at it for a full year. Guys just have to keep going. But it's tough. You feel for him first, the opportunity he had."
"Hopefully, they fix that and get it back going and get ready," he said.
With Garcia on the 15-day disabled list, Chicago recalled outfielder Jordan Danks from Triple-A Charlotte.
"Obviously, it was very unexpected and nobody wanted it to happen," Danks said. "But now it's just . I'm here to, like I've said in the past, just to play whatever role they want me to."
For now, Ventura said Danks will be used mostly off the bench. Dayan Viciedo will receive most of the starts in right field and has an opportunity to get back into the long-range plans of the team.
"We get a chance to see if at age 25 Dayan Viciedo can make the improvements that he's shown some signs of making already," Hahn said. "He's going to get an opportunity to play on a more regular basis and perhaps entrench himself in this long-term core we're trying to put together here."
