Teen Driver Backs Over Woman, Child In Parking Lot

SHELBY TWP. (WWJ) - A mother and her young child remain hospitalized after they were hit by a teen driver in a Macomb County parking lot.

The incident happened around 6:20 p.m. Wednesday outside of a Taco Bell restaurant near 23 Mile and Schoenherr roads in Shelby Township.

Police said their preliminary investigation revealed that a 16-year-old from Macomb Township was behind the wheel of a Chrysler minivan that backed over a 36-year-old woman and her 2-year-old child. Reports say the woman and child were hit with such force, the van's back window shattered.

The mother was taken to Henry Ford Macomb Hospital with serious injuries, while the toddler was rushed to Children's Hospital in Detroit. Their current conditions are unknown.

The teen driver was questioned at the scene and released. Police said alcohol does not appear to be factor in the accident, which remains under investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is urged to contact police at 586-731-2121.
