Fire Claims Sheriff's Home, Damages Others

HARRISON, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a fire destroyed the home of a mid-Michigan sheriff, damaged two others and sparked smaller fires fanned by high winds.

The Morning Sun of Mount Pleasant reports a cause wasn't known for the Monday morning blaze at the Harrison home of Clare County Sheriff John Wilson. Officials said the fire started in his basement.

Harrison Fire Chief Patrick Agin says winds gusting to 38 mph helped spread the fire in the neighborhood, including two other homes and a garage.

No injuries were reported.

Agin says the Michigan Department of Natural Resources helped battle area brush fires.

The National Weather Service says strong, sporadic wind gusts were reported across Michigan's Lower Peninsula throughout the day. Wind advisories issued in West Michigan and along the lakeshore expired Monday night.
