Woman Claiming To Be Mom Of Newborn Baby Found In Shallow Grave Comes Forward

CLAY TWP. (WWJ) – Police say a woman has come forward claiming to be the mother of a newborn baby whose body found in a shallow grave in St. Clair County.

The infant’s remains were found about 6:30 p.m. Sunday in the 9300 block of Stone Road by a man who was doing yard work.

Police said the woman walked into the police station on Monday gave them specific details about what occurred.

“Detectives from the Clay Township Police Department are in the process of confirming those details and processing the evidence to ensure that this individual is the mother,” police said in a statement. “Based up her statement the department considers this to be credible information at this time.”

Once the investigation is complete, the case will be handed off to the county prosecutor’s office.

Authorities have not confirmed how the baby died and autopsy results have not yet been released.
