Overturned Semi Spills 10,000 Gallons Of Liquid Asphalt Onto Freeway

LANSING, Mich. (WWJ) - A section of eastbound I-96 was expected to be closed in Lansing most of the day, after a tanker crash led to a liquid asphalt spill.

Lt. Dennis Hull with the Ingham Country Sheriff's Office said two people were injured in the accident that happened around 5 a.m. Monday near the US-127 interchange.

"The driver of a semi tractor, and then another secondary vehicle, crashed into the tanker after it flipped over on its side," Hull said. "Both of them were transported to the hospital."

According to M-DOT, all lanes are blocked on eastbound I-96 between Cedar Street and Okemos Road, as well as on southbound US-127 south of the I-96 interchange.

Eastbound motorists will want to take 496 and 127 up to Grand River and reenter the freeway from Okemos Road. To merge onto southbound 127, you'll want to exit at either Okemos or Cedar Street and head south to Holt Road.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
