2 Sickened By Mysterious Odor At Bloomfield Hills Starbucks

BLOOMFIELD HILLS (WWJ) -  Police, fire and EMS were called scene of a Starbucks coffee shop in Bloomfield Hills that was evacuated after two employees fell ill.

It happened late Wednesday afternoon at the store on Woodward Ave. near Square Lake. People who work in the area said the shop was completely cordoned off while firefighters investigated.

According to Bloomfield Hills Assistant Fire Chief Mike Morin, two employees reported there was an odor in the air that made them sick.

"The complaint was a little shortness of breath and some irritation to the throat, and that was the only complaint that we had at the time," said Assistance Fire Chief Mike Morin.

There were others in the store when it happened.

"At this point they've not had any other symptoms or complaints. I don't know if any...patrons were in there a that time," Morin added.

The two affected employees were taken to a local hospital for observation.

Meanwhile, Morin said, emergency crews were testing the air for anything for radiation to Freon. Nothing was immediately found.

Buildings on each side of the coffee shop, which is located in a strip mall, were also evacuated and tested.
