Spirit Of Detroit Being Scanned For 3-D Printed Mini-statue

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) -- Honey, they shrunk the Spirit Of Detroit. A prominent and popular downtown Detroit statue has been photographed countless times, but now its likeness is being scanned for a 3-D printing project.

Employees from Oxford-based CAM Logic Inc. plan to spend several hours Thursday morning at the Spirit of Detroit with a laser scanner to digitally capture it and create a miniature statue using a 3-D printer. Organizers say the scanner won't touch the beloved statue.

The company encourages the public to come out and observe the scanning process between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The 3-D model is being created for next month's RAPID Conference, which focuses on 3-D printing and related technology. The conference is hosted by the nonprofit organization SME and will be held at the nearby Cobo Center.

CAM Logic will be an exhibitor at the conference.
