Dad Backs Over, Kills 1-Year-Old After Washing Car On Detroit's East Side
DETROIT (WWJ) - A 1-year-old girl is dead after she was run over by her father in what Detroit police are calling a terrible accident.
The incident happened Thursday afternoon outside of a home in the 19100 block of Waltham, near 7 Mile Road on the city's east side.
According to police, the man was taking advantage of the summer-like weather and washing his car in the driveway when he decided to back up his vehicle.
Police say the man's car was in reverse when his brother came running out of the house, yelling for him to stop -- and that's when he realized he had backed over his 1-year-old daughter.
The baby was taken to St. John's Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Sgt. Michael Woody said the accident is such a tragedy, they've sent Detroit police chaplains over to the house to console the family. The chaplains are also assisting officers who first responded to the scene after receiving the 911 call.
The incident remains under investigation.
