Semi-Automatic Gunfire Explodes In One Detroit Neighborhood, 20 Shots Fired; Man Said They Need More Police

DETROIT (WWJ) Police on Detroit’s west side are investigating an overnight shootout that happened outside an apartment in the French Quarter complex in the 18000 block of Fitzpatrick Court, north of W. Chicago and west of Southfield Road.

One person is reportedly in critical condition, and was transported to Sinai Grace Hospital; no one was in custody as of Monday morning.

Witnesses said about 20 shots were fired from what sounded like a semi-automatic weapon. One neighbor told WWJ’s Ron Dewey he thought it was the result of an ongoing feud. He said he saw the same car drive by several times before gunfire broke out.

He said the area needs better lighting and a strong police presence. Several of the townhouse-style units are burned out or abandoned.

“It is not so much that it would stop crime, but it would discourage it a whole lot, it’s unnecessary, the stuff that goes on here,” he said.

Another neighbor said police responded quickly “this time,” adding they were there within 10 minutes.
