Fire Spreads In Southwest Detroit, One House A Total Loss

DETROIT (WWJ) A fire has spread to three abandoned houses in southwest Detroit, on Chamberlain West of Lawndale, near Springwells and I-75.

Firefighters told WWJ one home was on fire and the fire spread to a second home. There are no reports of injuries.

Arson investigators are heading to the scene.

"One of the two-or-three-story structures, the house is completely destroyed, firefighters are still battling the blaze, they're trying to stop the fire from igniting the house next to it," reported Lance Howard, hovering over the scene in Chopper 950.

Two or three pumper works are working on the fire. This is happening across from St. Stephen Lutheran Church.

Fire chief Edward Voss explains what they saw as they arrived on the scene.

"It was already fully engulfed when we pulled up -- I would make it 'suspicious,'" Voss said.

Voss added the second house, which has a charred side and a hole in the roof, can be saved.

The area is gentrifying, with Voss saying one of the homes that was damaged was in the midst of a renovation.
