Body Of Man Found In Apartment Fire Identified, Official Deems Blaze Arson

DETROIT (AP) – Officials say the body of a man has been found by firefighters responding to a fire at an apartment building on Detroit’s east side.

The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press report that the body of 61-year-old Edward Jones was found early Tuesday. Family members tell the newspapers that he was a veteran, a retired Chrysler worker and a grandfather, and they suspect foul play.

Arson Chief Charles Simms says the fire was arson. He says investigators found significant traces of gasoline and the front entryway was “doused in gasoline.”

Firefighters responded about 3:45 a.m. Police officer Adam Madera says the body had “some type of trauma,” but cause of death wasn’t immediately known. An autopsy was planned by the Wayne County medical examiner’s office to determine cause of death.
