Hearings Scheduled In Football Player's Slaying

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Two Detroit men face pre-trial hearings in the robbery and fatal shooting of Eastern Michigan University football player Demarius Reed.

The hearings are scheduled Tuesday afternoon for Kristopher Pratt and Ed Thomas in Washtenaw County Trial Court in Ann Arbor.

The 20-year-olds are charged with open murder and armed robbery. An open murder charge means that the jury can choose to convict them of either first- or second-degree murder.

A June 23 trial date has been set.

Reed, of Chicago, was killed Oct. 18 at his off-campus apartment building. Reed's roommate discovered his body at the bottom of a stairwell. Police said Reed's wallet and cellphone were taken.

The 20-year-old was a wide receiver on the football team and a communications major.
