2 Macomb County Beaches Closed Due To E. Coli

MOUNT CLEMENS (WWJ) - The recent heavy rains and warm weather have taken a toll on a couple of local beaches.

Macomb County health officials say Metro Beach on Lake St. Clair and New Baltimore Park Beach are closed because of high e-coli levels.

E. coli bacteria sometimes gets into the water from improper waste connections to storm sewers, sewer overflows and storm runoff.

Bill Ridella with the Macomb County Health Department told WWJ Newsradio 950 that swimming in the water could be a health risk.

"It can be detrimental, especially to young children, the elderly, the immunocompromised," Ridella said. "So, again, for the safety of the public we do close the beaches and...in time the water will clear up and it will be safe again for swimming."

It's not know how long the waters will be off-limits to swimmers.
