Missing Woman Found Dead In Clinton River

SHELBY TOWNSHIP (WWJ) -- The body of a swimmer that had gone missing in the Clinton River at River Bends Park in Shelby Township had been found by officials just after 8 p.m. on Monday.

Police received a call around 6:15 p.m. reporting a missing female after friends lost sight of the individual while swimming in the river throughout the day.

Shelby Township Fire Chief Jim Swinkowski said that divers from fire and police departments searched in the river for the missing woman.

"They were just swimming recreationally and she had disappeared near, what we think, is a drop off in the river where it's about two or three feet deep and the it drops off," Swinkowski said. "She was found near and in some log further downstream."

Swinkowski said that the woman's family was on the scene.  He would not comment if alcohol was a factor, saying police will now investigate.

"It's very difficult in a situation like this, because the firefighters -- they are human," Swinkowski said. "They do have families. They have brothers, sisters, children and any situation like this is very difficult on them. Obviously, we are talking to the family -- the family is obviously very broken up and all our condolences and prayers go out to them in this difficult time."

The woman was identified as a 21-year-old from Madison Heights, although her name was not immediately released.
