DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Red Wings have hired Tony Granato as an assistant coach.

Granato was an assistant for the Pittsburgh Penguins for the last five seasons, and he was also part of Team USA’s staff at the 2014 Olympics. Granato also has been a head coach with the Colorado Avalanche.

Granato played 773 games with the New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks, totaling 248 goals and 244 assists in 13 seasons from 1988 through 2001.

The Red Wings announced the move on Tuesday.

Tom Renney, a Detroit assistant the last two seasons, has been hired as president and chief executive officer of Hockey Canada.
