Man Admits He Tried To Sneak Concealed Knife Through Security At Detroit Metro Airport

DETROIT (AP/WWJ) - An Alabama man arrested at Detroit Metro Airport when he was caught with a knife in a shoe in his carry-on luggage says he put it there hoping it wouldn't be detected by an x-ray scanner.

The Associated Press reports the 38-year-old man, who hasn't been named by authorities, admitted to a Transportation Security Administration screener that he hid the weapon in the lining of his loafer with the intention of sneaking it through security.

The knife was confiscated and the man was arrested the morning of July 6 at the airport in Romulus.

Details surrounding the incident are contained in an investigative report compiled by the Wayne County airport police and obtained by he AP via a Freedom of Information Act request.

In a written statement, the TSA screener said he discovered "an artfully concealed knife" inside the passenger's left shoe.

Asked whether the suspect has been charged, county prosecutor's spokeswoman Maria Miller said Friday she is "not able to release any information about the matter."

The TSA wishes to remind air travelers that knives and most other sharp objects are prohibited in carry-on luggage; these items should be placed in checked baggage. For more information on prohibited items visit this link or download the MyTSA app to search specific items in the "Can I bring my…" section.
