Sanchez Fans 12, Tigers Blank Rockies For Sweep

DETROIT (AP) - Anibal Sanchez struck out 12, Victor Martinez hit a three-run homer and the Detroit Tigers finished off a weekend sweep of the Colorado Rockies with a 4-0 victory Sunday.

Sanchez (8-5) became the third straight Tigers starter to dominate the Rockies, allowing only two hits in seven innings.

In the three-game sweep, Justin Verlander, Rick Porcello and Sanchez combined for a 1.57 ERA with 27 strikeouts and two walks in 23 innings.

Joba Chamberlain allowed one hit in the eighth. Joakim Soria, who put up a 27.00 ERA in his first three outings with Detroit, gave up a leadoff single to Josh Rutledge in the ninth before retiring the next three batters.

Jorge De Le Rosa (11-7) gave up four runs and six hits in 6 2-3 innings. All six hits came with two outs.

The Tigers broke open the game in the third, scoring the game's only runs. De La Rosa retired the first two batters of the inning, but Rajai Davis's speed turned a routine single into a double. De La Rosa then hit Ian Kinsler, and Miguel Cabrera made it 1-0 with a single up the middle.

Two pitches later, Martinez hit his second three-run homer in as many days.

Sanchez fanned seven in his final three innings. The Rockies got two runners to second base against Sanchez, both with two out, and neither runner got as far as third.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Rockies: Christian Bergman (wrist) was scheduled to make his second rehab start for Double-A Tulsa on Sunday night. Bergman, who has been out since June 21, allowed two runs in three innings on July 29. ... Outfielder Carlos Gonzalez remained out of the lineup, two days after aggravating an ankle injury when he slid into the Comerica Park fence trying to catch a foul ball. Manager Walt Weiss said that he's confident Gonzalez will return during the upcoming home series against the Cubs.

Tigers: Left fielder Andy Dirks went 1 for 4 for Single-A West Michigan on his second rehab assignment to try to return from a back problem that has kept him out all season. Dirks, who had to cut his first assignment short in July, is hitting .286 in two games for the Whitecaps.
