Overturned Semi Truck Spills Fuel And Cargo Onto SB US-23, Causes Freeway Closure

WASHTENAW COUNTY (WWJ) -- A box truck overturned along southbound US-23, closing the freeway at N. Territorial Road during Monday evening's commute.

The semi truck reportedly was involved in an accident with a small SUV and flipped over, leaking fuel. Michigan State Police have said that the freeway could be closed until as late as 1 p.m. Tuesday.

It is currently not know what the truck was carrying, but the accident is being treated as a HAZMAT situation.

WWJ's Bill Szumanksi was overhead in Chopper 950 and reported that dozens of emergency vehicles were on the scene into Monday night.

Szumanksi reported that the truck landed on its side after sliding nose-down into a grove of trees on the side of the road, causing the top to split open and spilling about a dozen blue barrels out over the top of the truck and into the grass.

Backups were reported to at least to 9 Mile. The eastbound M-14 ramp to northbound US-23 was also closed down.

There have been no reports of injuries.
