Juvenile Prisoner Shoots Self After Struggle With Cop

HAMPTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a 16-year-old prisoner has died after shooting himself following a struggle where a police officer was wounded outside a Bay County juvenile facility.

Sheriff's Lt. Jim Chlebowski says the boy died around 9 p.m. Thursday at a hospital. WSGW-AM reports an autopsy is planned.

Authorities say the officer was shot in the right hand about 1 p.m. Thursday after the boy grabbed his gun in Hampton Township, about 90 miles northwest of Detroit. Police said the officer was taking the boy to the juvenile home and slipped a hand from handcuffs.

Chlebowski says the officer is Huron County Deputy Ward Carter, who was working as a part-time officer for the Sebewaing police department. Chlebowski says Carter has been released from the hospital.

The boy's name wasn't immediately released.
