Report: Michigan 10th In Country With Nearly 70,000 Beer-Related Jobs

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Beer is good business for Michigan, it appears.

A report showed the state's overall beer sector generates more than 64,000 jobs, with nearly 5,000 in the distributing sector, putting Michigan at 10th in the nation regarding beer-related jobs. The report was done by the National Beer Wholesalers Association and the Beer Institute.

The group found that beer distribution alone generates $1.9 billion in economic activity.

Developers of the largest beer bar in Detroit -- HopCat Detroit -- announced its grand opening date along with some of the festivities planned for the unveiling of its Midtown location.

It'll bring 100 new jobs to a 11,000 square foot facility, organizers say, and feature 130 taps. Highlighting Michigan craft beer will be the focus of the $3.3 million venture.

Bellaire-based Short's Brewing Company will attempt a world record beginning at 11 a.m. with tap takeover of at least 101 different varieties of Short's beers.

Additionally, the first 200 customers ages 21 and up in line prior to opening will receive a card good for a free order HopCat's Crack Fries every week for a year.

HopCat will be located at 4265 Woodward in the former Agave restaurant, which has been vacant since 2006.
