Bacteria In Samples Lead To Flint Water Advisory

FLINT (AP) — An advisory for residents and businesses to boil tap water before using it has been issued for portions of Flint.

City officials say Friday that the advisory comes after total coliform bacteria was found in some water samples.

Follow-up testing didn't find the presence of fecal coliform or E. coli bacteria. E. coli can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches or other symptoms of illness.

Bacteria and other harmful organisms are killed when water is boiled.

Officials say boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, bathing, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and preparing food.

The city says the water system in the impacted areas will be flushed and increased chlorine will be added to the water. The problem is expected to be resolved within the next three days.
