BLOOMFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - Bloomfield Township Police say several people have been arrested in connection with the beating death of a 77-year old man.

The arrests and recovery of stolen items taken during the killing of William Whitelaw in his Bloomfield Township home came after multiple search warrants were executed in the city of Wayne, according to police.

Whitelaw was found dead at around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5, at the Knollwood Pointe Condos in the 6000 block of Maple Hills Drive, near Inkster and West Maple roads in Bloomfield Township.  The cause of death has been ruled a homicide by the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office.

Police said that the investigation is ongoing and more arrests are possible "pending the results of evidence submitted for analysis."

The names of those in custody were not immediately released.

Neighbors told WWJ that Whitelaw was president of the condominium association, and lived on the property with his son.

His family released a statement thanking police and the public for their help to solve this case.

"On behalf of our family, we are grateful to Detective Mindy Hess, the entire Bloomfield Township Police Department, The Major Case Assistance Team and all of the other agencies for their dedication and consideration in connection with the apprehension of the individuals they have in custody," the statement reads.

"We are also grateful to the community for those who assisted the police with tips or possible information and to those that have expressed the sympathy to our family. We ask for your continued prayers."

Anyone with information about this crime is urged to call Detective Mindy Hess at 248-433-7767.
