Excellent Schools Detroit Releases School Grades For 2014

DETROIT (WWJ) - A very important 'report card' out for parents of Detroit school kids to consider.

Excellent Schools Detroit has released it's 2014 grades for hundreds of early learning and K-8 programs in the city.

As WWJ's Marie Osborne reports, the information is designed to help parents make good choices for their kids says Armond Harachien with the Excellent Schools Detroit (ESD).

"Academic status, which is basically proficiency scores; academic progress, which is how much students are actually growing - how much progress they are making, are they making annual growth on these assessments and the school climate," said Harachien.

Of the 177 K-8 schools assessed - 85 received 'Ds' or 'Fs' but he says there were some bright spots.

"We obsess with things like governance far too much, in our top 5 schools there is a private school Cornerstone Nevada, Charles Wright ... Detroit Merit a National Heritage Academy school on the east side."

"This year we had 14 silvers that were rated over the summer, that's the highest attained this year, we had no golds this year," said Denise Smith vice president of ESD.
