Detroit Mayor, Council Members Happy With Productive Tone Of Retreat

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Members of the Detroit City Council hit the road over the weekend for a retreat with Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan to talk about upcoming plans for the city.

Council member Gabe Leland said that the retreat at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Port Huron was largely productive.

"The idea that I brought to the mayor was the fact that we need to broaden our strategic partnerships, on a regional, state and federal level," Leland said. "We spent two days flushing out the council's agenda, then we presented that to the mayor and he walked away with some ideas of where the council wants to go and how we can work together and it was just so positive -- we couldn't have asked for a better experience.

"It's a great opportunity for the leaders and the decision-makers in Detroit to come under one roof and really talk about an agenda together," Leland said. "I was very impressed -- all nine council people, the mayor was there on Friday morning with his entire departmental team and we just connected."

Leland expressed how important it is for leaders to now "walk the walk" in the next stages policy-making.

"We can go there and talk all day long," "Now it's about continuing the conversation, working together and working that agenda through."
