18-Year-Old Monroe Woman Accused Of Faking Own Abduction Arraigned

MONROE (WWJ/AP) - An 18-year-old Michigan woman accused of faking her own kidnapping has been arraigned on a charge of causing a false police report to be filed.

According to the Monroe County Prosecutor's Office, Hayley Turner appeared Friday in the 1st District Court in Monroe County.

Authorities say Turner claimed she was abducted Aug. 7, just north of Ohio in Bedford Township, and was found safe 16 hours later in the Detroit suburb of Ecorse.

Turner was reported missing around 10 p.m. that night after police say called a friend to say she was going to stop and check on a man laying in a ditch at Dean and Crabb roads. Seconds later, police said, Turner told her friend, 'He has a gun' and the phone was disconnected.

Several law enforcement agencies searched for Turner until, the following day, a local resident spotted her "standing on a street corner, partially clothed, and holding a puppy," according to prosecutors.

After interviewing numerous witnesses, searching various cell phone and computer records and interviewing Turner, prosecutors say it was determined that no abduction had occurred.

Filing a false police report is a felony that carries up to four years in prison upon conviction.  If she's convicted, the court may also order Turner to reimburse local authorities for expenses incurred in the emergency response and police investigation, as well as in her own prosecution.

Turner was released on a personal bond and ordered to live with her parents.

Police have not disclosed a possible motive for the lie and details regarding where Turner might have been that night have not been made public.

A pretrial hearing is scheduled Wednesday, Sept. 24.
