D-DOT Push To Hire New Drivers For Bus System

DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Department of Transportation hopes to hire 50 new bus drivers by year's end.

Drivers are being heavily recruited by the department for the first time in years. DDOT has already trained two classes of new drivers, and a third class just started reports the Detroit News.

DDOT officials say the current environment is ripe for attracting new drivers. The bus service has drawn attention for late bus arrivals on routes as well as for crime on buses, including attacks on drivers. New security measures are being put into place, however.

DDOT says it's looking for employees with clean driving records, who can pass regular alcohol and drug tests. The department says the influx of drivers is expected to help improve on-time performance.
