Work Starts On Giant Aquarium At Great Lakes Crossing

AUBURN HILLS (WWJ) - Something fishy is going on at Great Lakes Crossing Outlets in Auburn Hills.

Construction started Tuesday on a 35,000-square-foot Sea Life Michigan aquarium, which is scheduled to open next spring in the mall's former GameWorks location.

Initial plans call for more than 30 displays of diverse marine life for visitors to enjoy, including everything from shrimp and starfish to seahorses, sharks and rays. The aquarium will contain 150,000 gallons of water and house more than 5,000 sea creatures.

A tropical ocean tank with a walk-through underwater tunnel will be the feature attraction, along with hands-on areas and displays of Great Lakes marine creatures.

Officials say the aquarium will offer everything from viewing windows, giving a glimpse into the ocean itself; to enlightening talks, feeding demonstrations and many other ways to interact directly with some of the creatures.
