Renovation To Macomb Mall And Iconic Sign Continues

By Edward Cardenas

ROSEVILLE (CBS Detroit) - Work crews began the next phase of renovations this weekend on iconic, space-age Macomb Mall sign at the corner of Masonic and Gratiot.

Large cranes lifted the plates with the names of the current, and new anchor tenants, onto the tri-pillar sign as construction crews continued their work on renovations to the interior and exterior of the mall.

An updated sign, demolition of vacant stores and renovations to the mall's interior are just some of the nearly $8 million in work being done to the nearly 50-year-old shopping center.

"Construction, including the sign, has gone very well," said Karl Zarbo, director of operations for Lormax Stern Development Company, which bought the mall in June 2013.

As the new plates were being installed and work on "respectfully retrofitting" the sign continued, crews continued to work on the new Dick's Sporting Goods which stands on the grounds of the former Crowley's department store.

Zarbo added that the Dick's is scheduled to have a grand opening on Oct. 24.

Additionally a Red Olive, Pot Belly, Alta, Shoe Carnival and H & M are coming to the Roseville mall.

These retailers and restaurants join existing tenants Sears, Old Navy and Party City at the 933,000-square-foot center.

He said that despite the recent heavy rains and inclement weather, crews are just slightly behind schedule.

"The project has gone well," he added.
