Detroit Zoo Welcomes Giraffe Calf Born Strong And Healthy

ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) - The Detroit Zoo has a new resident that's already on the move: A giraffe calf.

The zoo in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak says the reticulated giraffe was born Tuesday evening to 5-year-old Kivuli following a 15-month gestation. The father of the male calf is 6-year-old Jabari.

The zoo has posted a video of the yet-to-be-named calf standing up, nursing and nuzzling its mother. It was born outdoors in the giraffe habitat and took its first steps about an hour after its birth.

Detroit Zoological Society chief life sciences officer Scott Carter says in a statement that it "appears strong and healthy."

The calf is estimated to weigh about 150 pounds and stand more than 5 feet tall. It will be outdoors during warmer weather.
