FEMA Funds Still Available For Metro Detroit Homeowners Affected By August Floods

DETROIT (WWJ) - If you suffered losses or damage from the massive flooding in August, you could be eligible for some federal help.

FEMA representatives joined Detroit city leaders at Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School to urge local residents in need to reach out for assistance.

"If you register today, within a week you'll have a check," said FEMA's Dolph Diemont at a news conference Tuesday. "That's the average, and that's the average right now; and I have a couple of people who've already verified that they've received their checks within a week."

Mayor Mike Duggan said he's reaching out in order to clear up some misinformation.

"There's been very confusing information out there," the mayor said. "If you're a homeowner and your house has been damaged, it's a grant. If you're a business owner, it's a loan...But the great majority of people who had damage to their basement of their homes, that is a grant."

Some areas received more than 6 inches of rain, which flooded basements, streets and freeways over two late-summer days.

To register, southeast Michigan residents should call 1-800-621- FEMA (3362), or visit disasterassistance.gov.

Help is available Monday through Saturday at the Renaissance Unity Church in Warren, the Kulick Community Center in Ferndale, and at Wayne County Community College campuses on West Outer Drive in Detroit and on Northline Road in Taylor.

The deadline to register in order receive benefits is Nov. 24.
