The whole college uniform thing got away from us a long time ago.

Oregon football took it to a new dimension over the past decade by rolling out different uniforms for every single game. It's to the point now where you can't even recognize the Ducks when you click through the games on TV.

Northwestern entered the fray last year when they played Michigan and wore their patriotic stars and stripes uniforms. I thought they were a little garish and over the top, but you sound like you're anti-American if you put down a patriotic uniform, so I stayed silent.

But now, the Cats will take the field on Oct. 18 against Nebraska wearing a "Gothic" uniform that was unveiled on Monday. The jersey is inspired by the Gothic architecture that is prominent on the NU campus. Let me tell you something. I was on that campus for four years. Some of the architecture is pretty cool, just like it is at every other university. But if you need to EXPLAIN to your fans what the uniforms mean, perhaps you've taken a little too big of a leap.

I've heard all the arguments. The kids love the different jerseys. It helps in recruiting.

Whatever.

Maybe it's time for the adults to make some of the decisions. After all, there are plenty of pictures of me as a kid where I ask my mom and dad, "How did you ever let me wear that?" A lot of college football players will be saying the same thing to their coaches in about ten years.
