Non-Surgical Shaping Procedure Offered In Michigan

By Edward Cardenas

TROY (CBS Detroit) - A metro Detroit doctor has been selected to bring a non-invasive method to destroy fat cells to her local practice.

Dr. Kathleen Gilmore, a University of Michigan graduate, is utilizing the UltraShape instrument which uses ultrasound soundwaves to selectively destroy the fat cells that can't be eliminated through workouts.

The UltraShape destroys fat cells, which is similar to liposuction, but it is not an invasive procedure. The device uses ultrasound to rupture fat cells.

"It is not a matter of shrinking them to a point where they can still be allowed to grow back, they are actually completely destroyed by that vibratory force of the ultrasound,"  said Gilmore, how has been practicing cosmetic dermatology for 12 years.

Gilmore started with laser applications and has branched out into new treatments and devices. This latest technology, with an FDA-approved instrument ,treats the "pinchable problem areas" women and men have in the stomach and abdominal areas.

The UltraShape utilizes ultrasound sound waves to selectively destroy the fat cells. The procedure also takes about 45 minutes.

"Liposuction is not very easy because there is some down time associated with it,"Gilmore said. "People have been really excited to see non-invasive procedures that could actually give the result of something more invasive like liposuction."

While cosmetic surgery can help men and women achieve the look they want, Gilmore stated that is only part of an overall effort to get in shape, and stay in shape.

"You have to have that incorporated with maintenance of a healthy lifestyle," she said, which includes a good diet and fitness program.
