Teen Charged In Crash That Killed 16-Year-Old Girl
DETROIT (WWJ) - A teenager who was behind the wheel during a collision that killed a 16-year-old girl and left seven others injured could spend up to a year in jail after being charged in the case.
The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office announced this week that the 16-year-old driver has been charged as a juvenile with one count of a committing a moving violation causing death. If convicted, the teen faces up to one year in jail. Her name is not being released because of her age, prosecutors said.
The charges stem from an accident that happened just after 12 a.m. July 26 on Little Mack Avenue and 12 Mile Road, east of I-94 in Roseville, as an SUV full of teenagers was headed home from a bon fire.
According to police, eight people were in a Ford Explorer, traveling northbound down Little Mack Avenue, when the teen driver apparently disregarded a red light and was struck by a westbound traveling vehicle.
Sixteen-year-old Aliyah Diorio, of St. Clair Shores, was thrown from the vehicle and declared dead at the scene. Other passengers in the SUV were hurt in the crash, but none of the injuries life-threatening.
The driver of the second vehicle, a 33-year-old Clinton Township woman who escaped injury, will not be charged in the case. Although she was arrested at the scene for suspicion of drunken driving, prosecutors say toxicology tests revealed the woman was not legally intoxicated at the time of the crash.
