SOUTHFIELD (CBS Detroit) - The next generation of iPads may be unveiled Thursday at an Apple event in California.

CNET reports that the tech giant has sent out invitations to the media for the event at Apple's Cupertino, Calif., campus where the company is expected to unveil the next generation of tablets along with the new Mac operating system.

Apple is expected to announce the new generation of iPads which will have the TouchID fingerprint sensor, which is available on the iPhone 5s and the iPhone6 and 6 Plus, CNET reports.

This may allow the iPad to utilize some of the Apple Pay mobile payment service. The new iPad Air will likely also be thinner, lighter and offer an updated camera along with a higher resolution screen, the story stated.

There may also be an announcement that Apple, which holds the biggest share of the global tablet market, will release a gold version of the tablet.

CNET added that the rumored 12.9-inch iPad likely will not be released until next year.

In addition to the enhancements to the iPad, Apple is expected to discuss the OS X operating system, which will better sync with the company's mobile devices and the ability to make and take phone calls, CNET reports.
