What Are We Asking Google?

By Edward Cardenas

SOUTHFIELD (CBS DETROIT) - Google's voice search has more than doubled in the past year, but what are people asking the search engine?

The tech giant commissioned a study conducted by Northstar Research surveying 1,400 Americans across all age groups to find out their search habits.

According to a study posted on the Google Blog, more than half of the teens between 13-18 use the voice search daily and 41 percent of adults speak to their phones daily.

What are some of the top searches?

Teens used the search function for:

  • 43 percent to call someone
  • 38 percent to ask for directions
  • 31 percent to ask for help for homework

Adults used the search for:

  • 40 percent ask for directions
  • 39 percent used it to dictate texts
  • 31 percent used it to call someone

The search function was mainly used by teens and adults while watching television. Interestingly 22 percent of teens, and 15 percent of adults, used the search while in the bathroom.

Among the top reasons both teens and adults gave for using the voice search is that "It's the future," "For multi-tasking," and "Makes me more efficient."

While Google can perform a number of functions, there are limitations. Here are the top functions on the wish lists of those surveyed:

  • Send me pizza,
  • Find the remote
  • Find my keys
