U-M's Gardner Dealing With Difficult Season, Racially Charged Social Media Hits

DETROIT - Disheartening news from Ann Arbor ...  While it's been a tough year for virtually everyone at Michigan, and it doesn't promise to get any easier with a visit to Michigan State on Saturday. But as Detroit News profile of Devin Gardner made clear on Tuesday, it's been even tougher for the Wolverines' starting quarterback than most.

After a 2013 season spent taking a battering behind a porous offensive line and battling numerous injuries, Gardner's 2014 has been marked by more of the same and a penchant for ill-advised throws that's seen him post a 6-to-8 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

Those mistakes led to Gardner's temporary benching in favor of backup Shane Morris, and (he told the News) more than 1,000 comments' worth of vitriol on Twitter and Instagram -- much of it racially charged.-Devin Gardner said today that he has been called the N-word over 1,000 times on Twitter.
